+ The Red Wig by Claudio Gatti

This birthday party shot had a surreal feeling to start with for the flashy red wig. It inspired me to try some cartoonish rendering. I thought it would also work well in selective color to give even more prominence to the red wig.. and here it is

Hi Niamh,

Thanks for the comments. That's my little niece Marta: no, she hasn't seen it yet. I printed the color version on thick watercolor paper, put a matte and frame it and I really like how it looks. She'll receive it in a few weeks and I'll let you know her reaction..

THe post processing is great (although I have to confess that compared side by side I prefer the full colour version). THanks for posting the background info - have you shown the pics to the subject? What did she think of them? :)

To me, this one looks even better than the original one. The humour in the story is accentuated.

As you know Claudio, I'm comfortable with any amount of PP to get the image I want and the photograph as taken is often just a starting point. The only thing I don't like is the 'fun with filters' look, where the buttons and sliders have taken over from the image. Not the case here: the point of this is not the treatment but the image itself as a piece of art. Its strength of line, form and composition put it right out there, and I think it's fab. Tim A

Thanks for the comments.

Lots of visible post-processing on photographs is not really in my comfort-zone (I tend to prefer "invisible" post-processing) , but somehow I'm conmfortable when things get pushed to such extreme that "photograph" looses its normal meaning.

This is what's good with Challenges: you get the push to try things that you would not normaly do.

I'll see if I can put a forum posting togheter to explain the details when I have a moment. Although I did the partial coloring for the Challenge, I prepared the cartoon image a while ago and I don't remember exacly what I used or did.

So Cyril, do I take it you're partial to redheads then? ;o) I think Claudio is trying to trick us all into being drawn into this one with that fascination.

I even prefer the colored one.

Would you share some of your secret with us and explain us a little how you did ?

Thanks,
Cyril

Hi Claudio,
I love your work here. As I said in the 1st log message, you are clearly leading the processing stakes, and to excellent effect here. I wonder what other efforts this will inspire in others. I agree that this works very well with selective colour, although the coloured version you linked for us also works very well in that state. There are also enough points of interest to involve viewers in more than a quick glance. I'm not sure the detail of the door and stuff on the sofa at the left adds much to the composition. However, this is quite a versatile pic that appeals to me. Well done. If this is anything to go by, it looks like you might be looking to wrestle the crown back off me once you really get warmed up and shooting fresh subject matter! ;o)
Cheers, John
