Japan & Korea 1953 - 1954

Martin Davis was drafted in August 1952 and sent to Fort Riley, Kansas. Some black and white pictures from basic training and Radio Operators school are included in this gallery. During February 1953, Martin & Edith were married and Martin left at once for the Far East. He arrived in Japan early March 1953, and joined the 24th Infantry Division, 26th AAA AW BN (SP) at Camp Younghans, Japan. Late June 1953, the unit left for Korea went to Pusan, then to Masan and finally moved to the front line area replacing the 45th Infantry. After 18 mos. in the Far East, Martin left for home in late July 1954. All photos taken with a Zeiss Ikon Contessa, 35mm camera with a wonderful f 2.8 Zeiss Tessar lens. The 35mm Kodachome slides were photographed using an Olympus 3020Z digital camera.

Thank you for your excellent photos. I was with the radio section of HQ Company, 26th AAA in 1954-55, probably right after you left Korea. Do you remember any names from your time in the Bn. We also went to Japan, but were returned to Korea within two months or so. I remember we were located right next to a small plane air field. Very best, Donaldson Woods.

I was the Ordnance detachment, CO (part of the 27th Ordnance BN)at Younghans in 1954 after the Cav's return from Hokkiado. Gen Orlando Troxel was DIVARTY CG at the time.

I was stationed at Camp Younghans in 1955. I was assigned to a small army unit that housed the ASA guys and the post MPs. We were also the post defense team. Does anybody recall this unit and it's official name. At the time Camp Younghans was a 1st Calvary base though I believe the small unit in question was a separate entity. I would also like to know if anyone stationed at Younghans at that time remembers Lt. John Geraci from Hempstead, Long Island, New York. John commanded the Special Services unit at Camp Younghans.

William Clyde Crews served in Korea in 40th Division 223 Division after frostbite was relocated to 226th Signal Service Co, of 8th Army at Camp Nadar. Would love to hear from anyone who served in 8th Army 226th Signal Service Co.

What an education - looking at this website! I've just starting researching the Korean War during the time frame when my dad served in the 24th division. His name was Henry Wetzel. Your time in Korea closely matches his. This research is just for my own edification - as I've read on the war, I've wondered where the 24th traveled and what they encountered. The paucity of info on Korea is discouraging. When I found some of his old pictures with notes on the back, I started this web search and yours was the first site I came upon. I'm so grateful to see this. Dad has pictures from Camp Younghans in June 1953. His notes indicate he then went to Masan, Korea by Dec 1953. He has pictures of men named Simpson (auto mechanic), Wayne VanderYacht (Sr. Wheel Mechanic), Sherrell (Driver). There is a picture of a Jim Kohl from PW Camp #2 in Pusan Korea and and Communications Chief Sgt Jimmie Reese (also from Pusan), There is another picture with two guys named DiBruno and Wolfe. If anyone can shine some light on the above, I'd be most grateful. God bless you all for serving and God bless America.
