The fountains in Lisbon's Rossio have always interested me. I don't really know why that should be the case. I'm not generally a fountain fan: I have no fountain fetish to speak of. The Rossio fountains, however, have a special appeal. Perhaps it is the statues, which appear to be deep in conversation with each other whilst attempting to shelter from the jets of water; perhaps it is the way the moving water cools the air on hot Lisbon summer afternoons; or perhaps it is because I managed to catch a glimpse of them while Rossio was being reconstructed and the whole square was hidden behind large fences during the early 1990s which has given them a certain je ne sais qua. Whatever the reason, they are beautiful structures... and highly photogenic as well, especially in the special, almost impressionistic, light that is only found in Lisbon. The designers, architects and manufacturers of these fountains ought to be congratulated for these creations.
