1087. Lissom

25 February 2008

Isn't it strange how coincidences seem to happen? Take today, for instance. A few months ago we had a serious problem with water ingress around a skylight window at the top of our stairs. The water must have been collecting for a while, for it finally burst through the plaster, spreading dust and damp dirt everywhere, not to mention leaving a rather unsightly hole in the ceiling. Well, long story short. We contacted the insurance company, which agreed to effect repairs by covering up the breach and redecorating the hall - on the condition that I pay to have the leak in the roof repaired. Fast forward two months to when the repairs were being completed. That would be yesterday and today. Consequently, the house is full of a strange person busily pasting paper to the wall, and since I hate watching over people when they are working in my house (I hated it when people watched me installing phones in their homes back in the days when BT actually went into people's homes to install telephones), I found myself prisoner in my study on a day in which I felt very little urge to do any work, and when I had a great desire to do nothing at all. Now for part two of the tale... the other factor leading to the coincidence that has led me to this point. For some reason that is completely beyond my understanding, I have found myself thinking about a photograph I took a few years ago, to which I applied the caption "abscond". The picture was of two scones speedily fleeing the packet: scones absconding. A pun, as it were. Well, whilst a bored prisoner in my study, studiously avoiding getting in the decorator's way, I perused Pbase and, lo!, there on my profile page as a random example of my work, was the very scone photo about which I have been thinking. Naturally I had to visit the page to see what thoughts were running through my mind on that day (which was the day in 2005 on which I had my MRI scan). I noticed that at the time I had tasked myself with devising an image to illustrate dictionary.com's Word of the Day. This inspired me again, so much so that now, almost three years later (where does the time go?), I have decided to give this daily word thing another go -- if for no other reason than I really do have to start writing again before I forget how. So here's the first word in this (probably short-lived) project: lissom, an adjective meaning 1. Limber; supple; flexible. 2. Light and quick in action; nimble; agile; active. I think that word perfectly describes a cat -- so here's Mizzie.

Mizzie fits the description perfectly.
