Building an Extension Cable for Canon's RS-80N3

Problem: I have a Canon 30D that I use as my primary camera. About a year ago I bought the Canon RS-80N3 cable release at a cost of around $70 US. When you can stand next to the tripod, this device works fine, but when you can't, it's 3 foot length is just too short.

Solution: I could spend another $110 US for the Canon 33 foot extension cable or build an extension cable myself. I chose to build my own at a cost of about $10. So if anyone else is interested in doing the same, I thought I'd document the process I used.

Note: I will assume that anyone who attempts this has some basic knowledge about soldering small guage wires in confined spaces because that will be necessary. If you've never done any of this, then this project is probably not for you.

(The RS-80N3 cable release is compatible with many other Canon cameras. The 10D, 20D, and 40D to name a few)
