The Vine That Ruined My Day

THE BAD NEWS: During an exploration of Jackson Butte (a sandstone formation near
Moab, Utah) I was prevented from reaching my goal by a plant that looked like poison
ivy: it blocked a narrow passageway leading to terrain that interested me.

THE GOOD NEWS: Two sources have identified this vine as a form of Clematis.
It is probably either Clematis ligusticifolia (White virgins-bower) or
Clematis columbiana (Rock clematis). Exploration can continue!

My thanks go out to Rebecca Alexander of the Elizabeth C. Miller Library
at the University of Washington Botanic Gardens in Seattle, and to
Daryl Trotter of the Bureau of Land Management in Moab.
