In October 2006 I went to Moab with the intention of exploring the eastern side of Jackson
Butte in the hope of finding a scrambling route to the top. I hiked there via the shortest
route I was aware of: the mountain biking route called the Amasa Back Trail (ABT) and
Jackson’s Ladder, a foot trail that descends from the ABT into Jackson Hole. The one-way
distance to the butte using these trails is about four miles (six km). The exploration
was cut short by something unpleasant . I got revenge for that in the second visit.
