With nothing to do after it got dark, your reporter amused himself with night
photography. He was careful not to wander aimlessly in the darkness because
there was an "interesting" sudden change in elevation about 100 feet
(30m) away. The suddenness was 400 feet (125m)---straight downward.

John, you are excused for posing a sensible question, but please don't make a habit of it. My cell phone works in some of these out-of-the-way places. It's difficult to predict where it will function off the beaten path. As I recall, I was able to phone home from this spot and share my excitement with She Who Must Be Obeyed.
