Walhalla made some men very rich, but then the gold ran out, and even when the noise and smoke had stopped it was not a very attractive place to live, especially with all the trees chopped down and the street lights turned off. So Walhalla nearly died. But now the lights are on again, trees have grown back, the Star Hotel has been rebuilt to look like the original, and tourists have replaced the miners. We stayed at the Star Hotel and did the tourist things: mine tour, train ride, and the drive to Brunton's Bridge.
Advice: There is a sealed road into Walhalla. If the GPS thingy in your car tries to take you to Walhalla via a gravel road, turn back; it will lead you to the Thomson River where a pedestrian bridge replaces the original Brunton's Bridge. It appears from our picture that you could drive across the river in the right sort of vehicle, but this alternative was not attempted by the couple we met who had been thus misdirected. (Our Mrs Tomtom directed us correctly even though she talks funny.)
