Russell Falls is one of the most touted must-see and must-photograph spots in Tasmania. But in the photographs in the tourist brochures, the volume of water coming down is 2 or 3 orders of magnitude greater than in my photographs. No matter, it is still very beautiful, and quieter this way. The drive up to Lake Dobson is rewarding, too. The handout advises against setting out after 4.30, presumably because you might have to deal with traffic coming down – the road is narrow and bendy – but we set off after that, met no traffic, walked to the lake, photographed a wallaby and her young, explored the path along the lake edge and got back in daylight. Recommended!
