A Very Expensive Turkey

West Virginia

In keeping with the Thanksgiving theme. Even though it's officially over, I'll be eating leftovers for days.

Federal surveys have shown West Virginia ranks fifth in the nation in the sale of hunting licenses to out-of-state residents. So we don't discourage hunting here.

Open season on turkeys is very limited in time and only allowed in certain counties.

Here is a list of the wildlife that can be hunted in WV. And remember you can always use a camera.

Can you tell I'm trying to promote tourism? :) We need the money.

Wild Boar, Deer, Bear, Turkey, Squirrel (Gray, Black, Albino and Fox), Ruffed Grouse, Bobwhite Quail, Cottontail Rabbit , Snowshoe or Varying Hare, Ring-necked Pheasant, Raccoon, Red Fox, Gray Fox, Bobcat, Mink, Muskrat, Fisher, Beaver, Crow, Coyote, Skunk, Opossum, Woodchuck, Weasel,

Continuous Open Season:
English Sparrow, European Starling, Pigeon, Coyote and nuisance Crows.

No hunting:
Mountain Lion, Elk, Otter, Song and Insectivorous Birds, Hawks, Owls, Falcons and Eagles

Olympus C-5050Z
1/500s f/5.0 at 9.3mm iso64 full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

no wonder you carry your hiking knife around with you..... At my house we have skunks, squirrels and rabbits...hope you find the turkey suspect! :-)

LOl at Pete.
Interesting list of permitted hunting. Not one myself, but understand it does help control the population of some species. It scares the crap out of me.

Great picture, love the weathered boards! Sorry, not a hunter, how about some beautiful scenery to come and visit :)

I LOVE leftovers . . but I just can't imagine how many leftovers there would be from a sparrow, let alone stuffing it

The only firearm I carry is my trusty Uzi.. (Olympus 2100 for the uninformed).
Sparrows? SPARROWS?

I grew up in that county in Wisconsin where the Laotian man from Minnesota shot 8 people over being in a deer stand. While I don't believe they shot first, I do believe that they probably called him "gook," and some other word I can't recall. Anyhow, hunting is in the DNA of people who grew up in northern Wisconsin; schools close so the kids can go hunting. So .... while I support hunters, I wonder about the safety of it...

Jeez... what did the sparrow do to piss people off?

Appropriate Thanksgiving photo! Good contrast of orange and the weathered signboard.

I don't hunt much anymore with a firearm. Like to get out for pheasant and dove once in a while but that's about it. Now if something like a wild turkey should appear while I have the trusty 10D in hand...look out.. I'm shootin'.

I bet them dogs'll help you with them leftovers. :-)

Hooray for the camera hunters.

Karen poachers are a problem that exists all around us; on the other hand I like the contrast between sign and board. I think we will all eat leftovers for a couple of days.
