Deyr Gachin Caravansary

In the past, Caravansaries used to play same role as today’s motels and inns; in the lands which were covered mostly by desert their role became bold especially, not only as a place for rest and refreshment but also as shelter and a place for survival.
At the edge of Iran’s central desert where it is now National Kavir Park, there is a caravansary named “Deyr Gachin“ with 12,000 square meters area, 48 chambers, 8 camel’s stalls, shops, bathes, a mosque and of course a water reservoir.
Deyr Gachin has a title of “Mother of Iran’s caravansaries”; it belongs to about 1800 years ago where primarily was built as a fort and fire temple during Sassanid era (224 – 651 AD), then from 1000 years ago till now converted to a caravansary.
The caravansary is now under reconstruction.
