DEZFUL

PERSIA the ANCIENT IRAN


Dezful: Dezful (Dezh-pol, Persian: ÏÒÝæá ¡ Fortress Bridge) a city in the Khuzestan province. Dezful is 6000 years old, but the most famous ancient structure of the city is a bridge that dates back to 300 BCE.The bridge was built during shapur I and it is the oldest full functioning bridge in the world. When the Roman Empire Valerian was defeated in Battle of Edessa, remain of his captured army was used to finish the bridge. It's believed that the bridge was made over the ruin of a much older bridge, built during Elamite dynasties.

I am from Iraq and I live in the US now. The reason for my interest in Dezful is because my great grandparents came from there and even though my grandfather was born in Iraq, he always told me that he was Dezfuli and he was very proud of it.I would love to visit it someday. May Allah bless Iran and its people.

I love dezful , i am from dezful but i left 1n 1978 going to u.s.a . in my daily life i do picture my city and all it's beauty with great people of dezful, may god protect all great people of iran .

My father was born and brought up in Dezful and he is through and through a Dezfulli. He was so proud of his home town that he changed his surname to DEZFULLI. Although I was not born in Dezful but I remember visiting Dezful a fw times as a kid and I do have fond memories of the place.

This city is just a marvel there. I grew up there although I am not from there originally, but adapted myself to life there which is not easy since it IS a very closed society with its own culture and ritual. I never forget for example "feast of Deads" ( eide mordegan) which is just before Norouz (not sure which day) and on that day people bakes delicious cookies and distribute among others and also put on grave stones. Also people put on some sort of costumes and go about door to door in the evening, something similar to Haloween night in north america.
I'm planning to go there in next few months while visiting Iran, to visit my friends and refresh my old memories.

The city is ok, but people live in there are way behind the rest of the country. Dezful is a religious city and ironically has always supported Welayat-Faghih and its hardliners. They never took forward steps to bolster the recent Green Movement in Iran, to promote democracy in our country. Nothing on their behalf. Youth are left in streets riding their bikes crazy, causing everyone trouble. City suffers from great mismanagement and lot of corruption is currently going on in its administration infrastructures (party-bazi!). The river is open to public to swim anywhere they wish: You see some 13 years old kids swimming there from noon to afternoon, without supervision, some of them even passing the river! Government does not control anything. Whole bunch of jerks in that area, wandering around and committing crimes. Lot of criminals and people on drug and those womanizers chasing girls and ladies with their stupid noisy bikes. Police there, which is run by local folks, is lousy and is chiefly based on relationships and inter-networking. With Iranian government incapable of securing the life local tribes living nearby the city, in northern mountains and the south plain, and their inability to promote agriculture, lot of nomadic people have increasingly immigrated to the city. They face extreme hardship to live in suburban areas: having no education and training suitable for a municipal place, they usually do labor work, thanks to the good capacity of city for construction. Racism is everywhere in the city, and in particular Afghans and Lors are everywhere looked down. They neither know their rights, nor can they do anything even if they know. The accent is cool, but may take some time for you to speak clean Farsi, which is a must if you wish to work in a place like Tehran. There are also some ancient structures, including a bridge and mills around, which city officials should ban their public usage and keep them as historical heritages. It's altogether lovable, and I hope by proper management and people awareness of these issues, things get better in future.

I grew up in Dezful and have some of the fondest memories of my early life there. Specially "Ya Zahrah Hospital" where my parents used to work as foreign doctors and where we used to live :)

If I may add with your permission that the most eastern side of the bridge used to house the infamous and ancient mills which were used to extract oils and sweet "SHIRAH"s from seeds and to grind wheat which was grown FIRST in the world by the "EER"s who are the ancestors of "DEZH PEEL" people. According to my ancestral quotations the name Dezh Peel means the strong fortress( latter in the Sasanian era the word PEEL was adopted to mean elephant) Dezh Peel was one and the most northern of at least 6 other fortresses that formed a hexagon sorrounding a very sacred and MOST ANCIENT grounds which were settled by the ancient "EER"s(better known as "ARIAN"s) more than 35000 years ago. The six ancient fortresses are: DEZH PEEL, SHUSH, HAFT TAPPEH(early name unknown), CHOGHA ZANBEEL, SHUSHTAR and GATVAND. And to those of us who only simply brandish memories of Dezful I say your expressions of your benign memories are of no consequence to a land that cries out for life while you serve so servantly the lands that wish it's demise so feverishly.
