Guidance, Shanghai, China, 2006

The parents of this little girl run a small shop in a local market. I was drawn by the light and the shadow and by the shy and curious nature of the child. She moved into the bright light, while her parents remained hidden in the deep shadows. I took a few pictures, and suddenly a father's hand reached out towards the child from the darkness. This is the moment that best tells the story.

***I was stunned by the power of this concept, BJ -- the abstracted hand of the unseen adult seems to incongruously guide this innocent child into a world she can not yet even comprehend. The black and white medium greatly strengthens it by honing it down to its essence without any distractions from the clothing. It is an example of seamless integration of abstraction (the invisible person in the doorway), the incongruous (the hand and only the hand coming from nowhere) and human values (guidance is very much that.)

My goodness, this is quite remarkable. her expression holds you as her hand struggles with that bottle top - then that disconnected arm and hand raching from the darkness is chilling. Kal recognises the hand as a paternal one but without a body or a face...send shivers! I've never ssen a piture like this before.

Pure wonder Jen...blows me away. The hand is like it is from another world. Even though it is from the dark...the child's comfort and the age of the hand tells us this is truly support, and not a threat. Great, great, great (you and the picture). K
