I love this big fat zoom on D700. Here some high definition samples :
Maybe some copies are better than others... Mine is reliable, always very sharp on center frame, need to stop down f8-f11 for sharp corners, and I have to underexpose at least about -1 IL for fine landscapes with sky. Hand-on is excellent and zoom ring very smooth and accurate.

The only reason I got this lens was to achieve a 24mm equivalent field of view on a 10D. Results from this lens are worse than my experience with 24mm prime using film, including the smaller maximum aperture.

Maybe I've get a good copy but for an excellent lens. A bit too big..
