Power of Belief, Suzhou, China, 2004

I didn't have time to think before taking this shot. I saw this energetic woman coming out of the temple, the Buddha, the colors, and instinctively reacted. Later I noticed details such as the tiny red scarf at her neck that picked up the reds in the temple -- reds that symbolize the beating pulse of life itself. This is a picture about what belief can do for people. No matter how hard things are, or how difficult life may be -- just like the high doorsill -- she can handle them because she has something to believe in.

I can feel the energy of the disciple just after her pilgiamage and the power of static and steady Buddha who is bidding a farewell to her.

I am going to guess that the Buddha stature is a golden metal...the way it appears is pretty sharp, as in COOL.. :-)
jazzman cool.

****This image works so well because it is incongruous, abstract and extremely rich in human values. It tells me a story and does it in an unusual way. You do here what I have done so often in my own work -- you set the stage within your frame, and then waited for the actors to enter it. And did she ever! A woman in black, the color of emptyness, bursts through the opening in the curtain and hangs in space forever, just as Henri Cartier Bresson's shot of the famous puddle jumping man did back in 1932!. In spite of her black clothing and her advanced age, she seems full of energy and enthusiasm. It is as if she has just had an audience with God, and is bursting with renewed life. She even shows a tiny flare of red at the throat -- her heart seems to leap out of her body! This image speaks of what belief and faith can do for people. Your composition, frame, color, and most of all, your use of a frozen moment in time, add up to a memorable image, Jen.
