Damon's Hummingbird* by Jeff hall

Oxnard Shores, CA

I've been trying to capture this ellusive little fellow for weeks. This morning I set up my tripod, mounted my camera with a 300 f/4 L IS and 550ex flash, pointed it at the feeder and hooked up RemoteCapture. I was on the phone with my grandson Damon when I made the shot - hence the name Damon's Hummingbird.

Canon EOS 10D ,Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM
1/200s f/22.0 at 300.0mm iso400 with Flash full exif

Hmm - perhaps you're right. I'm probably mixing up Actions (cross-platform) and Plug-Ins (not). Anyway, sorry to everyone else (especially Jeff) for this hi-jacked thread! -Ed Hahn

Jeff,
I like the tight view of the hummingbird and the diagonals created in the image. Good setup to capture this moment. Roberta

Ed, are you sure about that (plug-in working on both platforms)? Sounds odd to me. Even if it is "only" a plug-in it has to be an executeable file compiled for the right kind of CPU - me thinks. BTW, Anna had her head on backwards, as she put it herself, and WAS thinking of NoiseNinja, please see her comment here:http://www.pbase.com/image/32840875 --Olaf

Anna - perhaps you mean "Noise Ninja"? Neat Image doesn't appear to have a standalone Mac OS X version...although the plug-in version ought to work with both. -Ed Hahn

Olaf, NeatImage works perfectly well with Panther on my Mac.

Todd - that's a very valid point. In retrosect, I probably should have used a lower iso. Thanks for your comment.

Only problem with NeatImage: It doesn't work on my Mac!!! (Sorry, couldn't resist!) --Olaf

I don't particularly like this image because it is dark and has too much motion blur in the bird's face, but I especially don't like the noise. Why did you use ISO 400 and f/22 if you were using a flash? You could have used ISO 100 and a wider aperture, or even with the same aperture, the TTL flash probably would have made up the difference.

Anyway, the noise can easily be removed with Neat Image, which can be purchased for as little as $29.90 from www.neatimage.com.

Here is what it looks like after I ran Neat Image on it in fully automatic mode.

I love shooting with my Canon 10D, and sometimes you need to use a high ISO, so you should think about investing the small amount of money it takes to get such powerful noise reduction.
