The other side of Al Elb Dam

We drove all around old Diriyah, but the weather was ugly and it just wasn’t a great day for pictures, although I took some anyway, to justify the trip.

This is Al Elb Dam, which seems to be a very popular place for picnics despite the fact that there’s no water in the dam. Maybe there is in a heavy rain, but it’s sort of hard to imagine it would be so much as to warrant constructing a dam. The lakebed on either side of it was totally dry, and in fact people were picnicking in it and along the banks. I’m posting a series of pictures of it all at once, and will save a fascinating one (I thought, at least) until later. This image shows a vast picnic area in the distance lining the road; there were hundreds of cars on the street of people enjoying the area.

The dam itself, and the other side of the dam:

It is interesting to see the group of people gathering in what looks like such an inhospitable spot. Very interesting capture. V

Looks like a lot was spent on this dam ! There would appear to be water underground with the green trees. Interesting shots V

A very nice set. If there is green, you need water and I guess the dam is there to make shure that the little rain that falls will stay as long as possible.

Fascinating set of shots. The aridity is very apparent and the dam seems almost bizarre in this context. V

These images really do show how arid the landscape is. And the dam certainly seems out of place. A very interesting series of images. V

Quite a giant structure and unusual place for picnicking, as here in Europe picnicking means more or less eating in the green, but I see, the tradition is the same just in a different climate. V
