Dunottar Crimson

Dunottar Castle, Stonehaven, Scotland

I'm aware that most folks have gone digital now but I just thought I'd let you see a complete revelation to me. This image was just about impossible to scan due to the high contrast and horrendous bloom of light dispersal from sunrise to castle. Yesterday I decided that maybe my scanner needed a clean right down to the optics (not something I'd recommend you do yourself by the way). I did it and the difference was nothing short of staggering. I cleared nearly 2mm of dust off the primary mirror, frankly I don't know how my scanner a Nikon 9000ED was ever able to scan anything. If you're a film user with a Nikon scanner visit my website, [see below] (New images / News) page you might find some very useful tips.

Anyway this is the result after cleaning, wish to goodness I could show you the before, life is so much easier now.

Whilst out with a group of Russian friends I noticed that the sky was quickly reddening at sunrise and so sprinted along the cliff tops to a spot where the castle would powerfully silhouette against what I hoped would be a blood red sunrise. I was not to be disappointed and despite the weight of the dark landmass the corrugated outline of the castle makes up for the dark cliffs as does that crimson ball of fire.
