Joop's Dog Log - Thursday Apr 22

I believe in freedom of speech, bark and howl. Of course. And freedom of religion too.
But now we have this muslim book in my country, and I`m having some doubts.
The book is a new kind of Mein Kampf. It`s called "The way of the Muslim".
It`s sold in Dutch mosques, like the big El Tawheed mosque in Amsterdam,
and in internet bookstores.
The book calls for a 'jihad', a holy war, against christians and jews.
It states that it`s OK for male humans to batter female humans.
And that homosexual humans should be thrown down from tall buildings, heads down,
and then -if they`re not dead yet- they should be stoned.
That is ridiculous and outrageous of course, but some muslims don`t think so.
Now what is the best way to go here?
Prohibit and burn this book (it offers ideas that don`t agree with the Dutch constitution),
and close mosques that continue to sell this book (like some political humans are suggesting).
Or let it go, and hope muslim humans will see how stupid this line of thought really is?
Tough one, huh?

Not tough, joop. Never, ever burn books. The first one may seem justified, but once it is allowed, the next one will be a "Huckleberry Finn" or "The Grapes of Wrath" or "Catcher in the Rye" - all of which have been banned somewhere in the U.S. at one time or another. Banning books is a very slippery slope. We must find other ways to fight such hatred and bigotry as you describe.

Oh boy, your face is full of sorrow and also so sweet giving us so hard stuff to think about. With such a past as Germans it makes us of course shiver to hear about those "new leaders" and even it is written to be forbidden in our basic law lots of young men follow the Nazi ideas attacking just the minorities you are mentioning. Their demonstrations are allowed even if it is forbidden to show all Nazi signs, words, labels, paroles, flags etc. in Germany in public and "protected" by the police. Books shouldn`t be burned, it doesn`t help at all , this hatred lives in the brains...who can put a little love in the hearts ? (Yeah, Henk, again this lost paradies....)

Yeap, I don`t think is so good to have this book that makes some human mind become agressive. We live in a new world and with a lot of kind of crazy people, we feel afraid about that. Let`s pray for our brother Dusty, I hope he must be better soon. Bye Joop

Very tough. It`s been a balancing act in the USA forever... I wish humans were a bit closer to perfect. This whole business of hating other people just to suit someone else`s purposes is truly sick. In my opinion, dogs are far more evolved in this regard.

I say "burn the book" but then where would our "freedom of speech" be? However, I think this world would be a fantastic and wonderful place without religion and dogma crapping all over humanity. Sigh. This is one of my biggest passions (fighting closemindedness) since I was raised in an extremist bible cult and I somehow managed to escape healthy and sane. (I`m actually currently writing a book about this very topic.) As always, you look very handsome today, Joop. And tell your human that I always love these pictures and words. :-)

Be glad you`re a doggie, Joop. Dogs are too smart to hate.

Tough one indeed. I am leaning toward the ban the book, close the mosques point of view. That tends to go against my `liberal` leanings...but hate and tryanny are not tolerable, not even in a free society...for they will soon destroy the very society that gives them the freedom to exist.

This is so sad. We were talking about the Holocast today at lunch, and it seems WE DO NOT LEARN FROM THE PAST... we REPEAT it! It's maddening.

Very tough. Humans aren`t evolved enough yet to deal with these things. I know if I see somebody on the street, sometimes it takes just lifting my lip a little to keep them from being bad. Sometimes it takes a little more. I never back down, but I would never kill one of my own kind. -Sarah.

it is a tough one joop. i totally disagree with what the book says. but we have to understand that we have grown up knowing that violence is wrong, but this particular religion has grown up on completely different views. but because they are selling these books in a country which believes in womens rights and freedom of sexuality, these books should be burned! grrr

The NY Times op-ed the other day had a column about a young (I think) Afgan woman who killed herself with sleeping pills, rather than be married off to someone other than her true love. Her father almost went crazy when he had to face what he`d caused. I don`t think the people who printed that book, or those who read it are going to change their
spots anytime soon. Too bad for everybody.

Well, you`re right, Joop. This is a tough one! I know that most humans, regardless of their religion, don`t believe that garbage. In fact, it`s the evil seperatists like this who are giving a bad name to all the fine, good, caring people in the world who practise Islam. Most Muslims don`t buy this trash any more than Christians or Jews. Seems to me tho, that more horror, more hideous and evil things have been done in the name of religion than for any other reason. I cannot believe that any god would want it this way, but that sure seems to be how humans interpret the word of their gods. I blame the humans, of course. But I know that`s not going to change. So, I dunno, Joop. Seems to me like neither of those choices is right. Maybe there could be a third? Maybe, somehow, ALL good caring people could join together, and say outloud how they think this is the wrong thing to teach people? Maybe if we spent some money explaining why? Sure seems a better way to spend tax monies than killing Iraquis! Or than stealing land from Palestineans. Or than strapping on explosives to kill Israelis. Amazing, isn`t it, how much hatred there is in this world, human to human?

that book doesn`t belong in your country or anywhere else, religious propanganda like that book you mentioned makes me sick. I too believe in freedom of speech
but the book you mentioned doesn`t fit into that category. What you are dealing with is hate literature and it shouldn`t be tolerated
