Train Shed, Chattanooga, Tennessee (1859-1971)

While this train shed, also known as Union Depot, primarily provided rail services, during the Civil War it became a field hospital for Confederate soldiers injured during the Battle of Murfreesboro as well as a commissary and sleeping quarters. It was demolished in 1971 to make way for office buildings.

Building materials are birch branches and bark, saltcedar twigs, ash bark, bamboo, sliced black walnut, cinnamon, white coral sticks, catalpa fruit, willow, reed, salal leaves, peach pits and mahogany fruit.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly unsharp.

*****

We went to the United States Botanic Garden’s Season’s Greenings exhibit titled “All Aboard,” which showcases historic train stations from around the country made almost entirely from plant materials.

This way to Capitol Hill, posted earlier:

Excellent image. Is that train also made out of plants? It looks too real. V
