Santa Fe Depot, San Diego, California (1887)

This station, built in 1887, was demolished when San Diego hosted the California-Panama International Exposition of 1915 and built a new one to accommodate the expected influx of travelers.

Building materials include raphia fruit, peppercorns, grapevine, Harry Lauder’s walking stick and birch bark in the clock.

Taken of the rear of the depot as I liked this image better than one of the front.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly unsharp.

*****

We went to the United States Botanic Garden’s Season’s Greenings exhibit titled “All Aboard,” which showcases historic train stations from around the country made almost entirely from plant materials.

The real Union Station in Tacoma, Washington, posted earlier:

Very interesting to see this with people in the image - it gives an idea of the scale of these projects. A shame they demolished such a beautiful station. V
