The Bryan School Lofts are located in a historic schoolhouse built in 1906 that was converted into 20 luxury condos in 2004. Among its interesting features are separate boys and girls’ entrances on either side of the building.
The building was originally known as the Thomas Barbour Bryan Elementary School, run solely by women and serving only the white community on Capitol Hill. Before its conversion, the building sat vacant for 20 years.
In 2015, the penthouse unit was on the market for $1.699 million, offering two bedrooms over a total of 2,377 square feet. Pictures of the interior can be seen at http://dc.curbed.com/2015/10/16/9910452/bryan-school-capitol-hill-penthouse
Quite by chance I came across listings for a new building by Eastern Market, not far from our house. Rather than preserve an older school (which in truth might not have been worth preserving), developers tore it down and built a large complex in its place. The monthly RENT runs from $2,738 to $10,333 for 1-3 bedrooms (with the most expensive unit measuring 2,300 square feet). I can’t even imagine who would or could pay that much to rent what is essentially an apartment…
