Teapot Dome Gas Station, Randy’s Donuts, Twistee Treat Shop, The Big Chair

We visited the US Botanic Garden’s annual “Season’s Greenings” display titled “Roadside Attractions” featuring plant-based recreations of iconic sights from across the United States, with G gauge model trains chugging around, below, through and above the displays.

The Teapot Dome station in Zillah, Washington, was a full-service gas station for many years. Its creator wanted to remind passersby of the Teapot Dome Scandal, a bribery scandal that took place in 1921.

Randy’s Donuts in Inglewood, California, is a bakery that prides itself on its donuts, pastries and its iconic giant donut sign, 32.5 feet in diameter and placed on the roof for maximum visibility by passersby.

Twistee Treat is a chain of ice cream stores that is still in operation today and has several locations, each in the distinctive swirled shape of soft-serve ice cream in a cone. This one was the original, in Fort Meyers, Florida.

Intended as an advertisement by a Washington, D.C., furniture maker, The Big Chair (partially visible at right) was the largest chair in the world when built in 1959. The original was 19.5 feet high and made of Honduras mahogany but was replaced by an aluminum chair in 2005.

What fun! Reminds me a bit of the gingerbread house competition they have a the Biltmore House. Haven't gone for many, many years. Might just talk Bill into going this year. My camera equipment is more up to the low light shooting there.
