Our last stop in this tour of the Persian (or Arabian, depending on your perspective) Gulf was Manama, the capital of the island-nation of Bahrain. A lot of people from Riyadh go there for the weekend since it's only a five hour drive across the desert and then the causeway and much less conservative than the kingdom, although we had never been. We had heard it was very small with not much to do so I didn't have high hopes for it, but in the end thought it was a pleasant city and would happily go back for a long weekend. I think I might have enjoyed it more if we had been able to explore the island itself, but due to security concerns we, at least, were restricted to Manama proper.
