At least two communist parties are active in Kerala today. In 1957 the residents of Kerala elcted the first democratically elected communist state government in the world. Many land reforms were instituted before the communists were defeated in 1996. In the past decade leadership of Kerala has shifted between the Communist Party of India and the United Democratic Front, which is currently in power.
