Landlord's Nightmare

My neighbours moved out today.....this is what was left behind. It's difficult to believe anybody could live in this kind of condition but it's true, I promise. No mess was made by me for photographic enhancement...what you see is EXACTLY how it was left. The only thing left to your imagination is the smell. It gets into your clothes within minutes and stays for hours. OK....update after so many comments. Just for the information of a couple of people whose comments I hid, the family were white. Also, maybe I didn't make it clear but I am NOT the landlord (thankfully). I am another of his tenants, living NOT like the couple in the photos. I actually pay my rent, so I have no worries about a similar eviction happening to me. Another thing I almost forgot to mention is that this couple are BOTH ex-military. He was a Sgt in the US Marine Corps and she was something in the Air Force. Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought the military would have taught them a little more self-respect than this.

I've been cleaning a two bedroom house for a elderly couple where the tenant was a total pig. He threw garbage all over the place. There was dog and cat shit all over the house but mostly in the bedrooms and what was worse because he didn't pay the water bill in the 8 that he lived there, there was four 5 gallon buckets of human waste. There was shit in the kitchen sink where he was dumping sewage down it. I took out 20 large trash bags and plus 2 ratty couches and other furniture. It was the worse apt that I ever saw until I came across these photos. I'm glad to run across these photo to show the elderly couple that I'm doing the house cleaning for that it could of been a lot worse for them.

Was going to rent my house 1800 miles away. Teetering - no. going to sell. Most renters don't understand that it IS work being a landord. Restoring a home over the course of years without pay, making everything perfect, and asking a few hundred bucks from someone so they can come in and trash it and blame you for TAKING instead of GIVING. House rental is not charity. Social Security Disability is charity. So many people applied to rent - healthy adults who derive most of their income from SSD and get the rest in CASH from side construction jobs. This country is a MESS with it.

This is the reason landlords must do inspections and noted in lease. Inspections avoid this disgust. Another reason - tenants may have intentionally caused this horror as revenge -

Its hard to see the pic. and see what some people think. My Mom is a horder, I love her to death, but since elemenrty school I have been trying to clean her house, I'm 27 now, and I'm still fighting it. Its hard when it is someone you love. It is a mental illness, a lot of people have it. And it is very hard and expensive to get treatment. I hope these people wil get help for the sake of their child, and themselves.

To the guest with the teenage girl problem...went through the same type of thing. Fixed it by bagging everything up and tossing it into storage-as is condition. When they have nothing to wear, you would be surprised what happens...I mean I took everything. Once it hit the floor or became dirty looking, it was mine! If they wanted the clothes back, they got one bag at a time and were made to wash them and put them away. If I found things on the floor, I started the whole process again. It took about three times and then the piggyness was not an issue again.

I believe it. I just took some photos of my 13 and 15 year old's bedrooms that look pretty comparable. the bathroom too. If my husband and I didn't clean up after them, it would be this bad in 2 months. Yet these girls (yes girls) are so particular about their hair and makeup and what they wear--- they just throw their clothes on the floor after wearing them and I guess do a "sniff" test. I do laundry every week and have to literally beg for items from them to wash. We have just gotten to the point that we will close their bedroom doors and not look. Five more years and they will be out of the house or I will be.... I will not live like this nor take care of anyone over 18. I am embarassed; I feel like a failure; we are not slobs in any way; they are not on drugs, their grades are fine... I don't understand it. This only happened in the past couple of years. They just don't care. And they will sit in their filthy rooms for hours and listen to their ipods. It's crazy. I feel bad for their future roommates. Maybe they will grow up someday, but after seeing these photos I'm not so sure.

I have been in property management since 1981 and while I have never had an encounter of this magnitude I am always amused when neophytes talk about buying a house and renting it out. Currently we are in a condo setting and people are having trouble selling their condos . . . so they are renting them out . . . totally unmindful and ignorant of just what being a landord can entail. All they see is that monthly rent paying for the property while they wait for the value to rise. There are and will be a lot of sorry people out there who think this is just a whiz . . .

This is nothing compared to my landlord nightmare. My tenant was a drug dealer. The police knocked the door down just after the tenant shot 2 cops through the door. The cops then fired 82 rounds into the walls, cabinet, fridge, window, and closet doors. This didn't include the 20 rounds they put into my tenant which killed him. It has taken two months to clean up the mess. Blood spatter, glass everywhere, and blood filled carpet.

I'm thrilled that we no longer live like that and could never go back but I'm glad I stayed with my mom no matter how our house was. We spent over a week cleaning and hauling stuff off to the dump at our own expense. Then we painted the entire interior. My dad likes to fix things. two months later the landlord shows up and sees a nice clean house inside and out with a nice green lawn and goes "dang Im going to have to up the rent on this place". If you want to rent from me you have to agree to pay for and pass a complete background check. plus have references and names of previous landlords plus a credit check and your info sure as hell better show no descrepancies off what I find on the internet. You wont believe I many white trash people just walk away after seeing my requirements.

Because no one seems to have asked this yet - was there a child living in this? I somewhat assume so, from the child's bed, but maybe the child had already been taken away (notice that there is no mattress on the child's bed, it only has the headboard and runners)? As for the mental breakdown thing. Two years ago I myself had a mental breakdown - resulting in me learning that I had bipolar disorder. I was never anywhere near this messy. Yes I let myself go, but I had enough decency to clean up after myself, and most of the time I was alone anyway. I also have mentally ill family members (worse than just bipolar disorder) who have more decency than this. So I wouldn't chalk it up to "they're mentally ill". There was something wrong with these people, yes - possibly a mental disorder, possibly just laziness. I don't know. I find it interesting that the -basement- seems to be the cleanest of the entire place. While I'm sure some of this was "Let us get revenge!" the -filth- of it makes me doubt that all of it was. I mean, look at the stove, the counter, etc that you can see through the mess. It takes a while to build that up (I should know, I live in a dorm. We try to keep clean, but it doesn't always work). Open the windows, clean it out, and put in some major air fresheners. Eww. I'm sorry for your landlord, truly I am, and I'm sorry for you too, since you have to live next to this, and will be living next to the cleanup too. Blech. I'm sorry :( No one should have to live with the effects of these people, if they can be called as such >:P

Nothing worse than a house that stinks so bad that the stench seeps through the windows. EMT dude is right. A true horder can tell you where everything is in a heart beat. I'm in Emergency Services, I've been called to homes like this to check on a tenant.. sometimes they're already dead and sometimes they're ill on the floor trapped under their own squalor.. this isn't hoarding though, believe it or not hoarding is much neater, stuff is 'organized' and stacked up in hoarding. Just from my own experience I disagree with the opinion that it's entirely staged as revenge; look at the layers upon -layers- of stuff especially on the stove, as well as the condition of the bathroom/tub. Some extra trash may well have been brought in after the fact and strewn about yes, but there's also either a pathological breakdown going on here or addiction(s), maybe both. I've been to residences like this where there were meth- and crackheads staying, I also knew of a home looking similar to this in a family with an alcoholic father, and there was a wife and 2 kids living in the mess literally ankle to knee deep in clothes and trash...the older son was a friend of my brother's. Urgh. it's funny, I can handle the smell of a -week old rotting corpse- better than I can a house full of garbage like this. Brrr. I don't envy you one bit sir.

If you ever watch Animal Planet you see homes like this all the times; the hoarders. There's also a show on BBC America called "How Clean Is Your House" where people come in to help clean up peoples houses that look like this. There are usually trails and a place to sleep open, and garbage everywhere else. It is surprisingly common.

As an investigator I can tell you this much. This is a set up scene. Classic among vengeful people. Military is possible as one comment was made they dont teach people to be respectful, though they do expect it. Meth user is likely, lab not likely at all. Look how clean the starway carpets are. Thats just clutter. They just filled it up with trash and bailed. Race is not an issue and cannot be concluded only by anyone who lived there. As far as Immigrants. Doubtful, if illegal they would be with family and probably not have the information needed to get the lease in the first place. As you said the exterior bore no resemblence to what was inside. Thats because most of the inside was trashed days before these pics were taken. Last year we rebuild the interior of a house but we had to pull our crew out because the owner was moving in when we came back to complete the job (about 2 weeks later) the house looked like the one in those pictures. Good questions from the anonymous guest 4 posts ago. No, it's not an apartment. Its a duplex. For those who don't know what that is, its like 2 houses next to each other, sharing 1 wall. I, unfortunately, rent the house that joins this one. You would never have guessed the manner in which they lived. The outside of the house bore no indication of how much they had trashed the place. The smell was not noticable from our house.I strongly suspect that after they found out they were being evicted, they emptied trash bags throughout the house. This still does not explain the cobwebs and other crap obviously accumulated though. Yes, it's easy to say how stupid the landlord is for not checking more regularly. However, the landlord is a very nice and trusting guy who is not constantly on our backs checking up on us. He made a bad call on this one and was repaid by a couple of absolutely disgusting scum bags who live in this filth. Personally, I think they should be shot. Several times. Then shot some more.

We JUST had renters like this, took two dumpsters and multiple trailer loads to the dump. The didn't have garbage service so they just piled it all in the garage, where inevitably wild cats moved in and peed and pooped on all the trash. It's hoarders. Compulsive hoarding. I imagine they walked out on all of it because it'd just be too much effort for them to sort through. Easier to hire the pros (there are companies that specialize in cleaning up these situations). Very often it's an OCD type thing, where they really can't throw anything out, because they'd have to sort it, and that function has broken down. So, actual trash and rotting food gets mingled with regular clutter, and it all snowballs from there.
