Coolatai, NSW Australia

Coolatai is my home town. It is north of Warialda, on the Western side of the Great Dividing Range, and is a friendly little village with the best light in Australia. It is beside the Ottley Creek in the Gwydir Shire and the soils vary between rich loams, blacksoil and sand. The population is about 130 people and one herpetologist. I moved to Coolatai because of its position at the confluence of several biogeographic zones, which endows the area with a rich mixture of fauna and flora usually more common in the north, south, east and west.

My grandparents (James Andrew Hurley & Ivy Ethel May Hurley (nee Sutton/Freer) lived in Coolatai (late 1920's to late 1930's). At one time they were the licencees/owners of the Coolatai Hotel. Visited on two occasions, the last being "A back to Coolatai re-union" in the early 2000's. Lovely place.

Thanks for the photograph of Lena Caroline Cox's headstone. She is my husbands great grandmother and came out from Jutland, Denmark. Bit of a sad story as she died of burns received when her dress caught fire while laundering the clothes. We are planning to visit the site next year.

I really wanted to reply to Ian Forster who commented on the Platfords in Coolatai.
I also would like to know information about them.. I'm doing a bit of family history research.
In particular Joyce May Platford who married Stanley M00re in Warialda in 1939.

On the picture of Jack WHeatley's grave was there another headstone beside it? As a descendant of his brother we have been told that his sister was buried alongside.

Nice place this Coolatai. I will be over for a beer some year soon.

Watch that Church. I recall one just like it (eerily so but it also had wall lanterns and a pedal powered organ), in Wandsworth, NSW. Round about 1983 the Church came and demolished it. Sold all the bits and pieces and a century of charm, character and rocking good tunes paid for another locksmith at the Peter's pearly gates.
