Gate at Coolatai

Coolatai NSW

Interestingly, we rarely reflect on the cultural significance of gates and fences. They say a lot about our obsession with
containment and possession while reflecting cultural nuances within western culture. Prior to European settlement of Australia
the borders between clan properties were well known. They often followed watercourses or ridgelines, but over apparently
unmarked country the position was understood through teaching songs and stories, the borders having been determined by
creation ancestors. A fence is a simpler method, but reflects a degree of cultural alienation.
Perhaps it is just my cultural alienation.

Oh come on Alex, it might just be a way of keeping cows off the roads!
