Scotty's Castle

One of the last things you would expect to see in Death Valley is an extravagant Spanish-Moorish mansion.

It was built in the 1920's as a winter vacation residence of a Chicago millionaire. According to the park ranger, "Scotty" was a flamboyant friend of the millionaire who led most folks to believe he was the owner.

The mansion and its furnishings have been impeccably maintained by the National Park Service, which offers hourly tours.

Unfortunately, the October 18,2015 2.7-inch rain deluge damaged much of the mansion and its furnishings. As of November 15, the only road to the castle was still closed.
