Mesquite Flat Dunes, one mile from Stovepipe Wells, is the most popular of five different sand dune areas in Death Valley. The dunes cover a 14-square mile landscape, with the highest dune reaching 140 feet. Animal and human tracks on the dunes are erased most nights by prevailing winds moving existing sand in new ripples and patterns, and blowing new sand in from eroded canyons and washes.
