La Veta, Colorado

Welcome to La Veta!

Frederick Bonfils, a 19th Century entrepreneur who helped found the Denver Post, wrote "'Tis a privilege to live in Colorado."

Never was it more true than in La Veta, a small town in one of the most beautiful settings on earth.

La Veta lies in the center of a fascinating geological region. For a discussion of the area try this: http://academic.emporia.edu/aberjame/field/rocky_mt/rocky.htm For some interesting area history, click here: http://www.huerfanocounty.org/

Huerfano County was one of seventeen original counties created in Colorado Territory in 1861. It encompassed nearly all of the Mexican St. Vrain land grant. It occupied almost all of the southeast quadrant of the state except for the Arapahoe and Cheyenne Indian Preserve. Its land was at times claimed by Spain, Mexico, France, the Texas Republic and various Plains Indians. In 1861 the county was divided into five townships and precincts, with the County Seat at Autubis (Autobees) Ranch near the junction of the Cuchara and Arkansas Rivers. The Indians were quickly dispossessed, and over the next fifty years Huerfano was divided and divided again. Parts of the original Huerfano County were portioned into present-day Baca, Bent, Prowers, Kit Carson, Cheyenne, Lincoln, Otero, Las Animas, Kiowa, Crowley and Pueblo Counties.

To the west of La Veta lies La Veta Pass, which opens into the San Luis Valley after taking a long detour around Mt. Blanca. Blanca (Sisnaajinii) is one of the four sacred mountains of the Navajo Nation.

Of historical note, the eastern grassland counties which were formed out of Huerfano contained Bent's Old Fort and Fort Lyon, and were the site of the Sand Creek Massacre.
