1/10/08 - Sunrise Silhouette

Careful with your eyes if you try this. Shoot wide open with a telephoto or long zoom. Need some mist/haze to cut down on the sun's brightness. Sun needs to be low (as in just up over the horizon). Little or no wind - even though the shutter speed will be fast enough to freeze the grass's motion it will be difficult to place the silhouette and focus accurately if it's moving a lot. Use a tripod (which obviously has to be capable of getting real low (as do you - a right angle viewfinder can help). Morning provides the best conditions.
This is actually a montage (a two image overlay). The sun & dew covered grass seed head is one image as it came from the camera. You have to look closely to see the second image - faint mountains and ridges behind the sun & grass.
