Another at http://www.pbase.com/ed_k/image/90608662 - Have to give both boys equal billing. This is Caleb, our 2nd grandson (no chance with Josh, the 19 year old).
Off to the annual school holiday music program. Took my new D300 and 18-200 VR lens to see if I could finally get a picture of the boys. I did and was impressed with the new gear. How many personal shooting "rules" did I break? Lots. I was in the back of a gym and they were at the other end. The fluorescent lighting was not good. No room for a tripod. So rule breaking time - hand held with VR on; ISO 1600 instead of the usual lowest value; full zoom; aperture wide open; Auto white balance (just to check how well it did; shooting in RAW so I could always override this later - it did great).
After getting the shot, it's not exactly what (grand)parents want. Post-process with a crop (while keeping enough of the image to show the context) followed by a Lighten/Darken center with the center placed on Caleb's head to brighten it and darken the rest. Continue with a vignette blur (again with the center on the head) to reduce the sharpness of competing background figures but still let us know what's going on. Finally, a partial conversion of the image to B&W while simultaneously using Capture NX's control point technology to remove the effect from the subject of my attention. "Cropping with Light" via Nikon Capture NX & Nik's Color Efex Pro 3. In the resulting image Caleb's face is a little soft (mostly due to doing minor noise reduction) but it fits the overall mood of the image.
