After the slip is reasonably dry, designs can be painted over
it with a resist — wax or shellac. That serves as a mask
to allow water to wash away the slip where it is not masked,
leaving a pattern. In the ultimate use of this technique,
enough of the unprotected clay surface is washed away to
leave the design standing above the surface for a 3-D effect.
