The Istanbul Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam has a website or rather, a group of friends of the Museum developed it. They are connected to Islamic culture by their education, their jobs, or just by feelings of sympathy, and contribute to the website in different ways. It is not their intention to relieve the Turkish authorities of the responsibility of developing an official website.

If you want to know much more: under the heading Publications I saw one can read the whole catalogue of the museum, with massively more information than I give here.

It is located in the former Imperial Stables Building in Gülhane Park. The purpose of the museum is to show this science and impress upon the visitor that the role of science in Islam has been underexposed in the general history of science. The museum tries and shows that there was a continuation of mainly early Greek ideas in the Islamic world that only later filtered through to the West, that then gradually took over the role being the most innovative. Also some original ideas from the Islamic world are shown.

I must confess I took a cursory glance at most of the objects, having been to many science museums and having read two books on the history of science in Islam. I took some pictures of striking objects that looked good, or were curious. Still, if you’re in the neighbourhood, the museum is well worth a visit.
