Relief with the children of King Araras

view map

This is a part of a larger relief, with the children of King Araras. From Carchemish, second half of the eight century BC.

A queen (or a wet nurse) carrying the king’s youngest son and leading an animal, possibly goat.
Detail of the large ‘relief of Yariri/Araras and Kamani’, that was located at the front face of the Royal Buttress.
The text, written in Luwian hieroglyphs, says: “ this (is) Tuwarsais, the desired (?) (one) of the ruler, the prince proclaimed for preeminence”. Neo-Hittite, basalt, Assyrian style.
