Chresis

From the House of Triumph of Dionysos / Upper level
4th century AD, Harbiye (Daphne). This mosaic was uncovered in room 1 of the house. Within the frame there are two female figures. The one on the left standing, the one to the right sitting on a luxurious armchair with red upholstery, only her lower part is visible, her head is gone. She stretches her right arm to hand a bowl to the standing woman. The latter holds a tray with jewellery, a text near her reads as Chresis, meaning “wealth acquired later” (symbolized by what’s on the tray). A cornucopia with fruits held by the seated woman can be seen as “real wealth” as given by nature. The scene would indicate how natural wealth and generosity trump material wealth, acquired later.
