Extensive areas of Bali are forested, not with native forest, but with planted, productive forests featuring food and other crop plants of which timber is only a minor product.
At their apogee, these forests are hyperdiverse, provide most of the food for local villagers as well as some cash crops, and appear to approximate a permacultural system on a grand scale.
The images in this gallery are from the fine food forest near Desa (Village) Wanagiri at the foot of Gunung (Mt) Batukaru. Here, fertile volcanic soils, moderate elevation (700 m) and high rainfall combine to make it seemingly possible to grow almost anything.
