This was a real treat, to travel by boat some distance up the Kinabatangan River in search of, and to encounter a herd of thirteen wild Asiatic Elephants.
There are thought to be just between 50 and 200 wild elephants in Borneo.

And not only to find them, but to watch them at close quarters for about an hour as they went about their business largely unconcerned about our presence.

Their habitat: a belt of long grass between the river and the rainforest.
