Obituary for Hialeah High School Math Teacher Betty R. Witt + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + January 17, 1935 ~ March 20, 2017 (age 82) Betty R. Witt passed away on March 20, 2017, loving wife of J. D. Witt. Born Betty Lovett on January 17, 1935, she was 82. Betty grew up in Pine Knot, Kentucky and married her high school sweetheart in August of 1954. After J.D.'s graduation from Eastern Kentucky University they moved to Hialeah, Florida. Mrs. Witt went on to graduate from University of Miami and received her Masters in Mathematics from Nova. She went on to teach mathematics at Hialeah High School for over 30 years. Mrs. Witt is survived by her husband J. D., sons James "Rusty" Witt and Allen Witt, daughter-in-law Diane, granddaughter Cristy Witt and sister, Lenette West Webb. In accordance to Mrs. Witt’s wishes, she was cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Hi Sherrill, thank you for taking the time to post your comments and memories. Regarding the water ski shows at Perhaps Cypress Gardens up near Winter Haven? They closed in 2003 due to declining attendance competing with all of central Florida's amusement attractions. Joanne, I'm sorry for the delay in responding, but thank you very much for your comments and memories about growing up in Hialeah. I forgot about the skim boarding in the standing water after heavy rainfalls but I did it too along with kids in my neighborhood. And you've brought up a point that I often think about: we were always outside doing things, playing all over the place without any parental supervision or contact with them until dark. It was a great time to grow up and I wonder how today's kids will grow up without being outside doing physical things during their youth. Thanks again for evoking more memories! Don

Hi Don, my family moved to West Hialeah (5530 W. 6th Ave.) in 1955. I was born 1960 and have six older siblings. We all attended Immaculate Conception, then either Pace or Hialeah High. I loved reading the various comments on your website. A few fond memories I have are The A&P off W. 49 St., the Greenstamp store in the same parking lot I believe, Palm Springs Miles GC Murphy's, Jackson Byrons, Three Sisters (we would ride our bikes through the roundabout store front), the Mosquito Planes that seemed to fly 10 feet about the rooftops, the AirRaid syrens on Saturdays at 1:00pm?, Pirates World with the Steeple Chase horse ride, and fond memories of picking up my oldest sister Maryann from work at Julius Caesars. She smelled so good they should have bottled that! Hialeah was an awesome place to grow up back then. Always playing outside. Skimboarding after the rain in the streets and on the easement with homemade plywood boards. Your parents never worried because they knew the whole neighborhood. We knew when the porch light came on it was time to go in. Thanks for a walk down memory lane. The good ole days...... Joanne Snell

Unfortunately Joe Boyd the attorney, and attorney for the City of Hialeah, was not related but I did put up campaign signs for him upstate while on a trip when he was running for a state office in 1966. Don; I went to Hialeah High in the 70's...Would have been in the class of '78 but moved prior( '76 ). I remember Salvino Susi (obit listed in your galleries) as the principal when I was there. Born in Hialeah in '61, I was adopted by a family in a private adoption arranged by Joe Boyd, an attorney locally who I understand went on to public service, and is related to you !! Lot's of memories of Hialeah, but alas no photos.

We lived on E. 50th Street (1951-1966). We would climb the fence at Hialeah High and get on the roof. Also in the summer it was open for things to do. I did ceramics there. My Dad was a teacher at Hialeah High from the late 50's to late 70's. He always spoke highly of Mr. Susi, as well as the prior principal, Mr. Pease.

Sal Susi, principal of Hialeah High School from 1974 to his retirement in 1984, passed away on January 6, 2010. Here is his obituary for those who are interested: Salvino V. Susi Born in Canajoharie, NY on April 1, 1924, died January 6, 2010 as a resident of Miami Lakes, Florida Mr. Salvino V. "Sal" Susi, 85, of Miami Lakes, FL died peacefully on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 after a brief illness in Maine. Born in Canajoharie, NY on April 1, 1924 he was the son of the late Samuel and Giovanna "Jennie" Schiavo Susi. Sal was educated in Canajoharie Schools and enlisted in the United States Navy following the attack on Pearl Harbor. After his honorable discharge, Sal attended Ithaca College and later Appalachian State University. He then moved to Florida where he began his teaching career. Mr. Susi was an educator for over 35 years. He was first employed as a Physical Education teacher at Hialeah Junior High and later at Hialeah High School. He was then appointed to assistant principal at Rockway Junior High before becoming principal at Edison Junior High and Westview Middle Schools. In 1974 he was then appointed Principal at his beloved Hialeah Senior High where he proudly served as Principal of the T-Bred family until his retirement in 1984. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, the former Patricia Roberts; a son, Richard Michael; a daughter, Jenni Lynn Susi- Taylor and her husband Donn; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother, Samuel Susi. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, January 11, 2010 at 10 o'clock at Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church, 63 Cliff Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317 with the Rev. James E. Clark as celebrant. Relatives and friends are invited and may call from 1 until 3 o'clock on Sunday, January 10, 2010 at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317. Interment will take place at a later date in St. Peter's & Paul's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Sisters of St. Joseph B. Imagine my shock when I found your web page. I remember you well. I have a photo of our 3rd grade class. Remember Sister Maria Carmela? I graduated from Notre Dame Academy and worked for 25 years at Hiram Walker's. I live 6 months in Nova Scotia and 6 months in Coral Gables. We sold our home in Little River in 1991, but it still looks the same. We sold it to an Italian. He fixed it up, but left the yard just the way it was. The oaks are soooo beautiful still.

Hi Nanette, yes I remeber playing with the moving blankets! Sorry to hear about your mother. My mother also passed away in 2005. She is buried in Hialeah next to my father. My sister is still married to the same man. She is retired and lives in Sebring. She has two children, six grandchildren, and one great grandchild. I myself have one daughter, 18 years old and sophomore at FSU. My wife of 23 years passed away in 2002. I saw the old neighborhood on google earth, it sure looks different! Remember when our houses were the end of the street and the dairy farm was on the other side of 12th avenue?

Mikey Edwards! I can't tell you how many times I've thought about you over the years and wondered whatever happened to you. I have so many pleasant memories of playing in our back yards together. You were much younger than me, but you were still one of my favorite playmates. Do you remember wrapping ourselves up in big black moving company blankets and then knocking each other down? It sounds so stupid to put it in writing, but it was so much fun to me! I'm so glad you wrote. Sorry to say that my parents divorced when I was away at college. My mom kept the house, but passed away in 1995. My dad lives in a retirement home in Ft. Lauderdale now. My sister lives in Pompano Beach, and my brother lives in West Palm Beach. Is your mother still alive? How is your sister? I remember the day she got married. I watched her get into the car to go to the wedding in her beautiful dress. How is she doing?

Hi, I'm also an old ICS student. I was in 2nd grade when the Bell when up. My teacher was Mrs. Otto. I also had Sister Emanuel in 3rd grade, Mrs McClaren in 4th, Mrs. Moore in 5th and Mrs Stahl in 6th. After that year I got sprung and my parents allowed me to attend Palm Springs Jr. I wouldn't trade those memories for anything. I do remember the nuns being so strict. I even remember Father Mclaughlin. He used to come in our class every Monday morning and if you didn't know what Sunday's gospel was about when he asked you, He'd shake you out of your seat. Wow, he was really strict. I remember certain kids like Monica Wheeler, Susan O'Toole, Danny McGuire...I had a huge crush on cute little Danny. I wouldn't trade those memories for anything. Toward the end the nuns were buidling a swiming pool and us kids used to try sneaking a peek at the nuns. We were dying to know if they wore bathing suits like everyone else. Does anyone have information regarding Exmoor School, which was a private school in Coral Gables? As I was too young to begin public school for first grade, my parents sent me to Exmoor, where I had a combined first and second grade class. This was the 1944-1945 school year. i have been unable to find any information on the Internet.

Hi Nan, I went to Twin Lakes first and when DuPuis was finished in 1958, many of us were sent to DuPuis the very next school year. I started there in 4th grade with Mrs. Sudakow. I had Mr. Bromfield for 5th and Mrs. Elizabeth Smith (who is still living, by the way) for 6th grade. I went on to Palm Springs Jr. High in '61 and graduated from Hialeah High in '67. Just went to my 40th reunion...what a blast! But the best time I had this summer was up at Live Oak Island on July 8th. Went scollop diving with my very best friends in all the world. Luv U!

I was in the first graduating class of DuPuis Elementary. I think it was 1958 or 1959 when they opened their doors. Remember the different colored doors and the glass picture windows for each classroom? I still have my yearbook that I got in 6th grade and I also have a class photo from 1st grade. The name David Byers sounds familiar. Were you in Ms. Holmes class in first grade?

This pictures bring back memories of every place from Miami to Hialeah. When we came from Cuba in 1961, my brother came with a scholarship from La Salle School in Cuba and he attended and graduated from La Salle High School at the bay, next to Immaculate Conception School and for the last many years they have La Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre Chapel there too. I came to Hialeah in 1968 and became best friends with the Bremser sister's Beverly and Roberta. We hung out with Ceto/Seto? Mullonary and George Brooks and Johnny Muringolo in a house off of 103rd street called the "House". I graduated from Hialeah class of 71. We always went to Monroe Station for the Wild Hog Gamborie every year. Had lots of good times. What great memories. I married John P. Sturniolo in 1973 and now am married to Robert Corbitt also a Highleah home grown. He is brother to Glenn Corbitt class of 68 I believe and sister Martha Corbitt class of 69.
