The decision to build a desalination plant for Sydney was a most controversial one but it now seems
justified. Despite all of the rain which has fallen this year, Sydney's water storage is still less
than 70% full. Increased population in recent decades may mean that the dams will never be completely
filled again. Supplementing natural rainfall with de-salted seawater now seems essential for the future.
The plant is just off Captain Cook Drive and its capacity can be quickly expanded to provide more
than a third of Sydney with fresh water.
