Koulman…was not a Cool Man.
This Irish monk was born in Leinster in 543, and entered the monastery of Bangor around the age of 20.
Around 580, he left Ireland and tirelessly travelled throughout Western Europe, founding abbeys and professing a very strict faith. He led a hard life to his monks by an austere rule. Pursued by Queen Brunehaut, to whom he blamed his dissolute life and his crimes, condemned to exile with his Irish monks, he had to flee Gaul in 610. They tried to return to Ireland but, still in Gaul, their boat ran aground near the shore. Forced to retrace his steps, he crossed the Alps and took refuge in Bobbio in Emilia-Romagna where he founded his last monastery. He died there.

a potent image, in a style one might call a Danad-o-type, is most suitable for a man with such a varied and troubled history...V
