Ceiling A La Nordstroms

Stonebridge Mall, Frisco, Tx

After hearing Lonnit's discussions on the power of thirds, I thought I would try out this power in a different way. Seeing this fine reflection in the floor in front of Nordstroms, I paused and waited while 10's of people pushed past me wondering what I was doing. I waited for the image to clear and only one person walked into the picture and quickly adjusted so that so some objects were on thirds but my main subject was not.

This is the first time I consciously broke the rule of thirds (only read about thirds in Wikipedia a few weeks ago) for my advantage. I wanted to see if the rule really works the way she says. By putting many objects at the thirds but putting a human (strongest attraction) not at the thirds, your eye is forced to examine the whole picture over and over. PS I love subtle color over B&W.

Thanks TV, Lonnit, and Rod. You all have been a bad influence on me. I haven't been looking at things the same. I'm hoping I still retain the ability to take a beautiful scenery capture letting its natural beauty speak for itself without me over interpreting it. I'm getting what I joined for ... an appreciation for the art part of photography. Maybe I can give some technical back. John

Nicely executed John. Quite creative for an... engineer. It is interesting to see your postings evolving from mostly personal shots into things quite original and even abstract. -tv

Wot happened to the bleeding smithereens doctrine:-)
Great picy John.

Geez, John, you pushed this one hard - you almost got me! Here's the rub... that little person? The right edge of them is running right along the left thirds line. That big guy's head? It's goes right to the upper line of thirds! Here's where you saved yourself! You specifically said you avoided putting the person at the INTERSECTION of thirds. Although the people are working directly with the lines of thirds, which is exactly what they should be doing, you did indeed break the rule. You broke it stupendously! You broke it brilliantly! You stuck with the strict use of rule of thirds, but your broke only the section of the rules referring to the intersection. This is the way to do it, man! Oh, you're a good study! You've made my li'l heart go pitter patter! WOOOOOOHOOOOO! That's EXACTLY what I want - only break as many, or as much OF a rule as you absolutely have to! I'm singing the qualified dance of joy!!! ~ Lonnit

Thanks TomD. Really this is one of our prettiest shopping malls and it was spectacularly decorated this year too. I purposefully avoided any normal shots since this challenge is about the unusual rule breaking which forces me to think about the unusual angles. This floor is much warmer looking when not overwhelmed by the gray overcast skylight. John

I always enjoy reflections. It's surprising you were able to get a shot with only the two people in it. I think they add interest to an otherwise bleak shopping mall. John, you have my sympathy for having to go there in the first place. Hope you get a nice present out of it. Happy holidays.

Man I hate going to the Mall because of crowds, especially Christmas crowds. I got bumped and glared at a lot while my wife who dragged me here in the first place waited laughingly out of the way. Oh here it is one person coming with many following ... in my haste I didn't get everything right but close. Unfortunately, my subject was taller than I realized now, his head reaches 1/3 of the way in, and his companion (whom I didn't see) enters at a 1/3 all probably disqualify this picture. So other than too many competing objects help me find other rules I have broken. John
