Nepenthes *

Oakland, CA

This is a newly opened pitcher (trap) of Nepenthes sanguinea. The red coloring becomes more intense as it get more sunlight. The pitchers get to a length of one foot. This one is 3 inches. They are carnivorous plants, living in peat moss or poor soil, getting nurishment from insects that drown inside the pitchers. Various kinds are found around the world & are easily grown on a windowsill.

Thanks for all your comments. Yes Rod, there are some similarities to the Venus Flytrap in looks. They are actually closer related to my fav, the West Australian Pitcher Plant.
