Thanks for your comments, Britt and Brent.

I've uploaded a version in which I blurred the background a bit in exhib:

Please let me know what you think...

This guy really has an interesting "humanlike" quality to his face.

Very pretty face :)

Armin, your remark make me shudder, vooohh!. This is no joke...

RK, high pass filter sharpen is a technique one use to have the sharpening effect mostly on the edges (much more effective with blurred background that you don't want to sharpen). Here is a link to a page detailing the "how to":
http://www.earthboundlight.com/phototips/high-pass-sharpening-photoshop.html
In the current picture, USM would probably have rendered equivalent results.
And please be frank - saying 'very nice' is good for the ego but not very helpful with regard to learning the art..

Love dogs.
Oved... whats hipass sharpen?
Find the picture to be bit flat...maybe increasing the contrast will help.
Hope I don;t come accross too negative...I am trying to say the way I see it...and I am no expert.

Hmmmm :o) I love dogs, one German sheppard was guarding my cradle...but in this case we can be happy, that only the collar is red ;o)))
Cheers, Armin

Thank you Alex for your comment. The dog was not very cooprative; as it saw me lifting the camera to my face it barked at me and ran away... (Scary dog, isn't it? :-) As for sharpening - my workflow has it both before and after the resize. I'll see what I can do with the background :-/

Nice looking dog
* This looks as if it is 100% crop. What is the purpose of sharpening before resize? Background is a tad too messy and distracting
