Thank you Rod, Mary Anne and Carole (again)!
Rod, I have another shot with decent background but flat subject :-( Should merge the two....:-)
Mary Anne, this sounds like a great idea, I might try it one day... I also know that some use a uniform gray cardboard for the background, and paint it black in photoshop. The "natural" background one is more appealing to me, though.

I think this looks better - I like it! CJ

I went to a workshop a month or so back (with our challenge champ Sharon, no less) where the presenter talked about making your own background by painting on canvas or plywood with flat black and dark green paint. Put it the correct distance behind your flower, and it looks just like and OOF natural background with no distracting elements. I've never tried it, but he showed us a couple of his shots using that fake background, and I can vouch for how well it enhanced his pics.

Very nice shot of the flower Oved, well done. When you are composing your shots in the camera have a look all around the subject for how the background will look. Then you can choose other angles that give a more pleasing backdrop. The background can be as important as the subject.

Thanks Carole! I've toned down the highlights a bit, and tried to blur the background some. I like the detail in the petals, but the background isn't very nice... Maybe I'll replace it with another shot of the same flower.

The flower is beautiful! I don't know if you're using a Photoshop program but did you try to "darken highlights" and "increase contrast" too as I think it might help tone down the bright sun and bring out the red more. I love these flowers and wish I could grow them here in N CA :-) CJ
