OK, new version posted. Used a different image of the artist as this one suited the backdrop better. Not the idea I planned earlier but it achieves what I was looking for without the 'insert' technique. Thanks everyone for the input. Najinsky.

Strange you should say that, thats part of the idea refered to below but with an additional twist. My only concern is when Sharon did this with the background a few challenges back, some browers (mostly on Macs I think) displayed it as a different shade and reduced the effect. We couldn't work out why. Also the effect is lost when viewed from the voting booth, but as most people view on here first that is probably less of an issue. - Thanks again for your great input. -Regards, Naj.

Strange little quirk you've got there! LOL! ;) Here's a suggestion - remove the insert and place it next to the picture, instead of within, and make the background between the two the same color as the background of this page, and then you will have the informational picture for us to reference without harming the artistic image. ~ Lonnit

Thanks for the additional comments. Lonnit, you are spot on. Something was bugging me about the insert and I couldn't work out what it was, and it is just as you say; the insert is an illustrative/tutorial device, not artistic. Thanks for the mental nudge! (PS: I intentionally left the insert touchng the edge, sort of a deliberate imperfection to emphasise something is wrong with the insert. I do odd stuff sometimes!)

Lydia. Because I had captured both the scence and also the artist capturing the scene, I found myself comparing the scene with the painting. So I decided for my entry I also wanted to give the viewer the chance to compare. I have another Idea which hopefully I will have time to implement before the time limit.

Cat, it was balance with the face. I wanted to include enough in order to give the artist some character but I did not want to disturb or distract him. Having said that, there were other disturbances and his concentration was very good as he seemed oblivious to them.

Regards, Najinsky

Conceptually a great photo and nicely executed. I like the fact that you have partially include the artist face, but not completely.

The insert is appropriate for editiorial or educational publishings. As a piece of art, however, the insert seriously detracts. Either way, with or without, the image works for either purpose. Do knock that insert down as far from the top as it is from the side, for proper balance. ~ Lonnit

Good entry. Regarding the insert, I think without it, one would be more drawn to his canvas to find out the scene for ourselves. His canvas shows enough to satisfy this after investigating. So, I vote "no" for the insert... but it certainly doesn't ruin this great shot. ~Lydia

Thanks for the feedback Bob.

Lens: The lens is sensational. I picked it up second-hand. I now suspect it was sold because it appears it only gives 188mm at maximum tele. Although this fact was not disclosed to me during the sale, I think it was the original owner who lost out because it's proved to be a gem.

Here are some examples from some playful seagulls over the weekend:http://homepage.mac.com/miller.a/Seagulls/

Canvas: I think paper is quite a generic term. Cash is as much dye, metal and subterfuge as it is paper. Newspaper is almost all ink, and contracts are semantics and wording. Whether this canvas is board, card or paper is semantics, it was blank to start, but now it's art.

Inset: I've been struggling with the inclusion of the inset and I'm really pleased the first (only!) comment about it is a positive one. I really want to include the scene being captured within the main image and until I find a better way to express that, this will have to do.

As always Bob, your comments are most appreciated. :-) Najinsky

Nice comp Najinsky, love that lens.
I guess he is using a 'papery' canvas... right?
I love the insert that tells the story. Well done ~ Regards Melbob
