Santa Monica

This was specifically shot for the Challenge, rule of thirds portion. But the colors were washed out & false and so this did not work as intended...hence this is another in my "Rescue," image series where the original image is a failure, but...throught skill and luck and a little vision, you save the image and yourself. I think that it ended up quite fetching...like a Fine Art print.

Well, rescued or not, this came out great. I love the composition and the hint of violet is nice. This is one of those photos that has my eyes moving back and forth around the frame - it really seems to have a sense of motion. Jim H.

I like this a lot Traveller and you did a great job of rescuing it. Great composition and I also like all the subtle contrasting elements you've presented. You could either add a few pixels of grey canvas to the bottom or even crop a few pixels off the bottom and right side to have all the tires touching the edge but I rather like it the way it is - adds a little tension! Oh, nice purple too! ;-) CJ

I like this a lot Traveller. I guess I'm one them that can't quite completely settle with the lower back tire being the only thing touching the frame. Adding a little space there would be good, but I think a slight rotation and the tires touching the frame in three places (or probably just the lower two) would be a very unique image- although it's still great just as it is currently. Well done.

The thing is, we know about the purple RoT thing so it changes the balance for us. The bicycle is needed as counterpoint for the odd purple smudge and so will work with or without adjustment, that's to say, it's just fabulous the way it is! Great image. Well done! - Najinsky

Well, if Kiki says do it, I guess I will....I'm such a push over...lol. Or at least I'll try since she at least had the decency to tell me how to do it...though as I think about it so did Phil.

What is interesting is how we can convince ourselves of most anything...I had decided that I liked the two separations that seem to be bothering people.

I've been looking at this repeatedly, and like it a lot. A classic. But one detail annoys me: There is space under the front wheel, there is space behind the back wheel - but there is NO space under the back wheel! The horizon is simply a wee bit off. I would have tried a 0.21 degree CCW rotation of the original and re-crop, giving the downsized image 3 pixels of ground under each of the wheels.

I'm not entirely sure when my comments assumed such importance (or whether they are worthy of such attention) - or indeed, whether I'm happy that my comments seem to have more impact than my pictures :) But thanks anyway!
Traveller - adding the extra pixels wouldn't require you to revisit all the steps, as you could just increase the canvas size, but if you're happy as it is then obviously that's not necessary! I do agree with Chris, though, that it's a shame the front tyre isn't doing the same thing (be that on or off the border) - another thing that ought to be pretty easy to fix with a little rotation or skew (but only if you wanted to).
But these are very minor points on an otherwise excellent image.

I like it a lot, Traveller. I think you can add it to your "all time greatest hits" collection, or something similar, if you wish. The composition works for me and the little bit of colour is "just right", in my opinion at least. Great stuff. Regards ~jnconradie

Actually, the tire on the border, makes this image awesome! normally I would say no way, don't do it, but it really works here. If anything I would like to see the front tire on the edge also, I might give a little room with the rear tire and the right edge though (slightly more than you have). I like the illusion that being on the edge creates. Here is the thing, if people have a strong reaction to your work, bad or good, then you must be done something right because they notice what you are doing. That all goes out with respect for Phil.

Memory is a funny thing, Chris, I don't remember the beach being black and white either....lol. But it nice having that subtle little touch of color there. Thanks to Mylnn for getting me to see the possibilities.

There is actually a lot going on in this picture...light vs dark, bicycle vs. vehicle, sky vs land, land vs. sea...and a touch of purple, (grin).

As to Phil's comment, and I aways read what Phil has to say carefully...this was slightly cropped to place the rear tire directly on the border of the frame. I could give it a little separation, but, I'd have to start from scratch and can you ever really duplicate again the exact steps you used to get from original image to final product? Besides, I think I prefer the tire on the border.

Love it! The purple is very subtle, but works so well.
My only nit - shame that the rear wheel is touching the edge of the frame - if the original pic is like that, you could try adding a 2 (say) pixel white border...
