Thank you for your comments. I see why you think the gaussian blur is sloppy . I was quite careful with it and noticed ,while processing, the same thing.
I went back to the original to check and the edges of the heads and some of the hair is blurred. I would think it is head movement , wind and camera shake , this shot is handheld ( albeit braced) at 400mm with the 100- 400 mm IS and is a small crop of large picture taken with this result in mind.

I like the shot, but the post-processing (Gaussian blur?) has left a halo around heads and shoulders. With somewhat whimsical smile, I note who is rowing and who is supervising. This never works in my family [*sMiLe*]...
The DOF and Perspective on this is great. It looks like you're right in the water, and (to me at least) the background looks like a wall of water about to crash over everything. Taking out the horizon line makes this just that much better!
